Booker Prize Shortlist - update
The Booker shortlist was announced yesterday, and so I trundled off to my local Waterstones this lunchtime, to buy just one of the contenders. I signed up for a Waterstones loyalty card on the way, and talked to the bookseller about Nicola Barker's Clear, and Edward Docx's Self-Help, feeling very stupid as I confessed that I had finished neither of the two novels.
The Shortlist is is as follows:
Darkmans by Nicola Barker
The Gathering by Anne Enright
The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Moshin Hamid
Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones
On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan
Animal's People by Indra Sinha
This turn of events does not bode well for me finishing Self-Help this year.
Waterstones were out of stock of Animal's People and The Reluctant Fundamentalist. I couldn't bring myself to buy The Gathering straight away, as it had a Maggie O'Farrell endorsement on the back, so I have come away with the colossal and imposing Darkmans, and the rather lovely looking Mister Pip. I'll be starting Mister Pip this weekend, after I've finished The Road.
